Join FreeBMD

Welcome to the FreeBMD Signup process.

In order to transcribe for the FreeBMD project you need to join a Syndicate. A Syndicate is a group of people, led by one or more coordinators, who are transcribing a range of records for the FreeBMD project.The coordinator will help you in getting started transcribing for the project.

When you select one of the options below, you will be shown a list of Syndicates that are currently looking for volunteers. You should send an email to the first one on the list requesting to join their Syndicate. They should then guide you through the process from there onwards.

Volunteers will need Internet access to upload their entered data to FreeBMD and possibly to download transcribing aid programs and scans of the Index from the FreeBMD site. Volunteers who wish to transcribe during their free time at their place of employment should take into account that most companies do not allow their employees access to download programs or upload files to the Internet.

Perhaps, however you don't have the time to help transcribe, but could help in some other way:

• You may already have some names transcribed, perhaps as part of your own research and want to send them to us. Please contact Peter Abbot at PeterAbbott.Eymore@freebmd.org.uk

Peter Hendy-Ibbs at peter.hendy-ibbs@freebmd.org.uk to confirm the format of the file. (Please note that neither Peter is able to put you in touch with other people who have submitted data. Any e-mails requesting such contact will be discarded)

Due to the work involved in preparing the files, only files cotaining more than 100 records can be accepted by either Peter. The work necessary on the files containing less than 100 records is disproportionate.

• Note: at present we have no requirement to set up new Syndicates and no request should be sent to synd-coord@www.freebmd.org.uk
• We expect all our potential Syndicate Co-ordinators to have had some experience as a transcriber. Generally, we would be looking for six months in an existing Syndicate with a reasonable number of files uploaded to FreeBMD.
